First ride....

Wait a minute...."First" ride?

The first ride of the season took place a while back...what is this "first" ride thing all about?

Well...it's the FIRST ride of my retired life. Pulled the plug yesterday, so I thought I should honour the occasion with a celebratory ride.

Woke up to a beautiful sunny day so I set out and mowed the front and back yards, then a little bit of garden cleanup....then off I go to an old haunt; the Chilliwack bench.

Instead of simply running the Bench from one end to the other, I decided to do a bit of exploring along the way.
This is a map of the area:

A couple of weeks ago, we visited the Chipmunk Caves area and I wondered where the road went, long ago when there was a bridge here.
Using Google Earth,  I could see the trail on the other side of the river, so I went there.
As you can see, the November storm/flood did some real damage to the riverbanks.

To the very right of this photo...you can see the road that we were on and how it just ends at river's edge. Now...I am indeed on the opposite shore!
The slide to the left, is the same one as in the above photo, only from a different aspect.

After exploring a bit...I continued onwards to the Chipmunk campground. It's incredible to see the amount of debris left here by the flood-waters. Plenty of firewood, for sure!

This campsite has the best view of the river, minus the debris!

On that same trip, two weeks ago...we were on the other side of the river, looking at the trolley-car thing. River is definitely starting to come up.

I take a side trip up Mt. Thurston FSR. It is very steep in some places....soon I am among the clouds!
A nice storm rolls onto the Liumchen/Church area.
There has been a bit of logging up here, which explains why the roads is in such nice shape...unfortunately, I lose my bearings due to the numerous new roads that have been cut into the mountainside...so I make my way back down.

Soon I am back on the Bench and heading towards Elk FSR. I stop for a second, at a familiar viewpoint.
Looks like it's raining down there...good thing I'm headed for the other side of this hill.

A few miles further, I come across another viewpoint.
Mt Slesse looms in the background.

Church/Liumchen and Windy Knob, across the valley from my position.

Once back on "my side" of the hills, the weather improves dramatically. There's still a bit of snow falling in the hills, and the freshet has begun....
It's kinda cool to be riding when most people are at work. After 44 years in the work-force, I think I deserve this...I know I could get used to it!
